While the latter half of 2016 may be in full swing, the festive season isn’t the only exciting event on the horizon. If the exhibitions of the last few months are anything to go by, architecture and design buffs have a lot to look forward to as 2016 draws to a close.
To whet your appetite, here are a few of the highlights from the design conferences you may have missed
Between January and April, the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Gallery in London hosted an exhibition titled Creation from Catastrophe: how architecture rebuilds Communities. Destruction – whether it is caused by man or a result of natural disasters – presents modern architects and design thinkers with opportunities to radically rethink city spaces. The plans for rebuilding London after the Great Fire of 1666 were just one of the architectural opportunities featured as part of the exhibition.
The beauty of the 99U Conference, which took place in New York in May, is that it is a ‘doers conference’. The format featured talks and presentations from successful designers and entrepreneurs. While these can border on motivational speeches, the aim was to give practical tips to people looking for a little inspiration. Attendees also had the chance to schedule some time with an on-site career coach to discuss their creative hurdles.
In April, Sao Paulo hosted FEICON BATIMAT; the benchmark event of Latin America’s civil construction industry. With a history spanning more than 20 years, the annual FEICON BATIMAT event is the ideal spot for generating business across various fields. The show ran in parallel to a conference where internationally renowned professionals came together to share their insights.
Sometimes achieving architectural and design success means being a bit of a maverick. At the beginning of the year, the Royal Academy of Arts’ Mavericks exhibit showcased 400 years of British architectural history. The exhibition featured the work of twelve maverick architects who refused to conform to mainstream architectural practices and opted to break the conventional architecture mould.
A little closer to home, the Design Indaba took Cape Town by storm in February, attracting speakers and attendees from across the globe. Highlighting the changing face of modern architecture and design, speakers at the event included former advertising creatives Chanel Cartell and Stevo Dirnberger. They’re the creative minds behind How Far From Home – a personal project that saw the pair selling everything and taking a trip around the world.
And now for the upcoming design and modern architecture events world tour (not exactly 80 shows, but we think these ones are well worth a visit)
At the end of September, people looking for a little design inspiration can attend AGI Open in Seoul, South Korea. The conference features the latest work from members of the exclusive, nomination-only Alliance Graphique Internationale club. What is really awesome about this event is that the affordable registration fees mean that many aspirant architects and design students will be in the crowd, giving attendees an opportunity to brainstorm with the future of the industry.

At the end of October, the five day ORGATEC conference, held in Cologne, Germany, will focus on finding the perfect interplay between work environments, work processes and working culture. The idea being to provide fresh perspectives and come up with interesting ideas that actually make future innovation possible.
