Checklist: a survival guide to ensure your home renovation ideas pull through | WindowArt

With everything in life it’s better to plan ahead. It was Benjamin Franklin that said: “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” Here is our checklist to ensure your renovation ideas pull through unscathed.

If you plan to do a complete home renovation, consider finding somewhere else to stay for the time being, because rest assured, you will find yourself knee-deep in a mess and no way to continue living comfortably. Small things like getting food ready will become a mission, therefore stay at a friend or family member’s house for the time being, while you get your renovation ideas in order.

Get the nitty-gritty sorted out

Getting your home renovation ideas off to a good start requires a bit of prep work. It is tedious work, but you’ll be grateful you did it further down the line.

  • Set yourself clear targets and review it everyday to see if you are on track.
  • Check to see if you need council approvement, especially if your renovation ideas may affect your neighbours. Once you have approval, let your neighbours in on what’s happening, so they can better plan their lives around the building noise you’ll inevitably make.
  • Get everything in writing (be sure your contract covers everything you’ve discussed).
  • Be mindful of unexpected circumstances, for instance: three tiles accidentally break and you need to purchase more.
  • Purchase your building material well in advance, therefore decreasing your waiting time.
  • When fixing small things in the house it’s okay to DIY, but when it comes to larger projects, save yourself the misery and hire a contractor.
  • Compare quotes, don’t go for the first one you come across.

Keep your budget in mind all the times

Be mindful about how much you’re spending. Always check your budget before making a hefty payment. It’s a good idea to keep a buffer in your bank account, therefore you’ll ensure everything you need gets bought. A good way to keep yourself in check is to make a list of needs and wants, down to the smallest item. Use a checklist like this one, to help you organise what item needs repair and what doesn’t.

Ensure accurate measurements are taken

You may be eager to complete the project, but have every contingency in place to ensure the correct measurements are taken, even if you have to play hall-monitor. It’s happened to the best of us, we take a quick measurement here and a quick measurement there and then when it comes down to the actual installation lo and behold – it doesn’t fit!

Don’t buy cheap materials

Not only could this route potentially be dangerous, but it could ultimately cost you more if you need to refix everything. Carpenter Jimmy Little says, “If you’re going to do it, do it. If you can’t afford to do it, wait.” Listen to the professionals when they tell you something needs to be repaired from the ground up. You can’t slap a little lipstick on a pig and hope no one will notice.

Do a lighting check

Often, once all your renovation ideas are completed, homemakers forget about lighting. This is an important aspect, because lighting can make or break a room, you need the right amount to complement the room’s aesthetics and décor.

If you want to give your windows a face lift, then include frosted glass to your renovation list. The frosted glass is cut and prepared on our premises. We like to go out of our way for you, by meeting you at the installation site when it is the most convenient for you. There will be no mess left after installation and there will be no pesky bubbles, unlike DIY window film installations.

Take accurate measurements of your windows and use our pricing calculator so everything fits it in line with your budget. If you need further assistance, download our home renovations guide.
