Tackle bedroom décor like a pro [infographic]
One of my favourite things about the internet is that it’s an instant portal to an unlimited supply of innovative home décor ideas, renovation tips and images of beautiful homes. If you’re anything like most modern homeowners, you’ve probably spent a good few hours clicking through beautiful home décor images on Pinterest or scrolling through ‘most amazing home décor ideas’ lists on BuzzFeed.
While stunning images of top-end home designs are excellent creative fodder for anyone about to take on a redecorating project, many people still find DIY home décor daunting. After all, there’s a big difference between falling in love with a particular décor style and knowing how to recreate it in your own home.
In reality, you don’t need to hire a professional interior decorator to create the home of your dreams. If you’re redecorating your bedroom, for example, all you need to do is arm yourself with a few simple DIY décor tips and let those creative juices flow.
This infographic from Primera Interiors lists seven useful bedroom décor tips to get you started:
1. Take a floor plan with you when you go shopping.
This tip is bound to come in handy when it comes to bedroom décor. The infographic suggests jotting down your bedroom’s dimensions, including where the doors and windows are, and sketching in where you want to put the bed, chest of drawers, vanity table or any other pieces of furniture. Be accurate with your measurements. Take your floor plan with you when you go shopping to ensure that you don’t buy anything that’s too big – or small – for the available space.
2. Decide where your focal point will be.
The focal point of any room is important – it’s the first thing you notice when you walk in. Your bedroom’s focal point can be anything; the bed, your favourite piece of art, a fireplace or even a rug. Decide early on what you want your focal point to be and design the rest of your bedroom décor scheme around it.
3. Mix and match.
Contemporary bedroom décor encourages a ‘mix and match’ approach. You don’t need to stick to one colour or even one style – a tasteful melange of contrasting prints, shapes, colours, textures and styles will give your bedroom its own unique look and feel.
4. Consider the function of your bedroom.
Despite its name, a bedroom isn’t just a room where you put your bed – it’s much more than that. Think about what you’d like to do in your bedroom. Can you picture yourself reading a novel in an armchair by the window? Would you like to have a quaint little writing desk in the corner? Are you a fashionista who needs extra storage space for all your clothing, shoes and accessories? Factoring your personal needs into your bedroom décor plans before hitting the shops will ensure that you invest in the right furnishings.
5. Failing to plan is planning to fail.
This tip is a simple but important one, especially for DIY decorators. A little planning goes a long way, so always make sure that you’re properly prepared for the task at hand. Ensure that you’ve got all the tools and materials you’ll need, that you’re wearing protective clothing and that you have a friend on hand to help if you need it.
6. Don’t skimp on quality.
Buying low quality, badly made furniture is likely to come back to bite you in the long run. This is also true when it comes to window coverings. Curtains and fancy blinds can be incredibly expensive, especially if you’re lucky enough to have a bedroom with big windows. Instead of opting for cheap, tacky blinds, consider installing frosted window vinyl decals instead. Frosted window vinyl is an affordable alternative to curtains and blinds that’s timelessly elegant as well as durable. Top quality window vinyl comes with a 10-year warranty and is designed to last a lifetime.
7. What are you waiting for?
If you’ve carried out the necessary preparations, don’t sit around procrastinating. Sooner or later, you’ll have to plunge in and turn your dream bedroom into a reality.
