The biggest home renovations blunders to avoid | WindowArt

So you have decided to renovate your home. Even though you have a clear idea of what you want, you know this is going to be a long and potentially frustrating journey. Home renovations are not child’s play and when mistakes happen they can be costly and cause you incredible stress.

Here are some common mistakes homeowners make that can result in huge home renovation blunders:

Miscalculating your home renovations budget can have dire consequences.

Home renovations can easily overextend. You should spend a substantial amount of time pricing out the home renovations that you would like done and then fix your budget before you begin renovating. It is important to stick to the original decisions you made about various materials and fixtures as changing your mind can result in mismanagement of your money.

Not setting aside enough time for the home renovations to be completed.

Unfinished home renovations can be dangerous so establishing a realistic time frame in important. If you are doing extensive home renovations and you have moved out of your home temporarily, you don’t want to find yourself and your family in a position of having to move back into the home that still has stripped walls, unfinished floors and exposed electrics. If your home renovations are being completed while you continue to reside in your home, then the quicker they are completed the better.  If you allow for any delays you will end up overspending and creating even more discomfort in your home and for your family.

Attempting to do DIY home renovations.

Refitting new kitchen cupboards or painting a feature wall are easy to do yourself. However, rewiring your electrics or fitting new flooring must be done by an expert. Attempting to complete home renovations by yourself can result in you wasting an enormous amount of time and money. One incorrect measurement could result in you having to retile the entire bathroom which will overextend your budget and time. By hiring an expert you safeguard yourself against ‘redos’.

Choosing everything beautiful and not looking at the practical.

All the home renovations you decide to do in your home should have equal parts practical and beautiful uses. For instance, choosing a lavish carpet to install throughout your home that can be easily damaged or marked and will need replacement sooner rather than later, is not a wise choice. It’s a lot of fun choosing fixtures and fittings that will make your home look gorgeous but you need to ensure that they add value to your property and are functional, making your home more comfortable. Home renovations are an investment so it’s important to choose materials, fixtures and fittings that have a positive impact on your home’s value.
