Vinyl decals caught in action | WindowArt

It’s hard to imagine anyone that doesn’t end their day off without watching a little telly. The question is, why do we love staring at a square box so much? The short answer is it’s pleasurable. We find our quick escapes and for a moment get instantly transported to another world. However, there needs to be a connection between fiction and reality.

The stories depicted on popular shows and movies are always connected to some form of social truth. The stories we get drawn into may involve a fictional character like Harry Potter, the story could be set in the future like Back to The Future and could represent made up places like Metropolis. What they all have in common is that there is a human point to be made and we can learn something from them.

We empathise with characters in movies and television series when we see common items that we enjoy in our own lives. Whether it’s a cup of coffee from our favourite coffee chain, or a brand of clothing that we also wear. That’s why we were excited to see our favourite vinyl decals on the screen.

The Big Bang Theory

Penny moves into an apartment across from two socially dysfunctional physicists. Towards the end of the first episode, Penny asks Leonard to retrieve a television set from her ex-boyfriend. Leonard agrees and off the two go, when they get there, they are greeted by an apartment block filled with vinyl decals in a rectangular and block-shaped pattern offering the apartment block semi-privacy. This helps create tension in the episode because we don’t know what the guy looks like. This episode highlights the aesthetic and mysterious effect of vinyl decals.

You’ve Got Mail

Nope – you’ve got vinyl decals, and a lot of it. This movie features it in almost every scene. The classic 90’s rom com is about a bookstore owner who is a business rival with the man she’s secretly in love with thanks to their online dating. You see vinyl decals in her home, featured on a room dividing sliding door in her bedroom, on her front door and used as a decorative display on her windows in her bookstore. In this instance we see a lot of floral decals that represents the main female character’s feminism.

Friends

Can you believe it’s been 12 years since we bid farewell to the loveable cast of Friends? And to this day it remains one of the most popular sitcoms of all time, but did you know that the Central Perk coffee house the six main protagonists frequently visited was graced with a touch of window film, on the front door and around the brand name to help it stand out.

Bridget Jones Edge of Reason

The Bridget Jones franchise follows a dowdy thirty-year-old lady who’s perpetually unlucky in love. We follow her as she chronologically tells us about her life as if we are reading her diary. Right at the beginning of this second installment in the franchise, we see her doubting her boyfriend’s faithfulness. She heads out on a mission to see what he’s up to. On getting to his front door she struggles to see what’s happening inside because a window full of vinyl decals is blocking her view. She can only see shadows and make inconclusive guesses as to what is happening inside.

Marvel’s agents of S.H.I.E.L.D

S.H.I.E.L.D is a proud organisation of elite spies. And they show off their bird crest at every opportunity in the series: on their glass boardroom windows, on their air ships and on helicarriers. If they are discussing a way to beat the bad guy, there’s sure to be vinyl decals showing their well-known logo off in the background, reminding everyone who they are.
