Why the best interior designers choose vinyl decals | WindowArt

Kitchens and bathrooms are the hottest rooms in the house this year, and the best interior designers are incorporating vinyl decals into home design to give these rooms a cosmopolitan edge.

Kitchen remodels have been a big theme of home renovations over the past year, and this trend doesn’t show any signs of stopping. The kitchen is in many ways the heart of the home; it’s filled with the comforting aromas of home cooking, it’s where we uncork a bottle of wine after a long day at work and it invariably ends up as the home entertainment hub, too. It’s no wonder that kitchen remodels are a top priority for most homeowners.

The bathroom makeover is also going to be a big feature of home renovations in 2014. Think underfloor heating, skylights, spacious showers, rain shower heads and ultra-sophisticated design.

Traditionally one of the most neglected rooms in the house, more and more homeowners are showing interest in transforming their bathrooms into comfortable, stylish sanctuaries. After all, it’s one of the only places where we allow ourselves some TLC; slathering on a face mask and soaking away the stresses of modern day life in a bubble bath.

Hot kitchen décor trends include open style shelving and glass front cabinets.

Kitchen design today is all about display. Gone are the days of hiding crockery and cookware in cupboards and cabinets. The popularity of open shelving and glass front cabinets indicates a focus on the creative display of pots, pans, crockery and ornamental objects.

Interior designers are updating this look by using vinyl decals to add texture to glass surfaces in the kitchen. Expect to see a combination of clear and frosted glass in the kitchen, as well as vinyl decals in the form of decorative motifs adorning glass front cabinets.

Because vinyl decals can be as decorative or as understated as your kitchen décor requires, interior designers are taking full advantage of the diverse range of looks available to them.

Sophisticated glass is a big look in bathrooms this year.

Along with plush finishes and comforting underfloor heating, bathroom renovations in 2014 will feature big, spacious showers with rain shower heads. It’s all about sophisticated luxury and the space to unwind, so glass will be a prominent feature.

Again, vinyl decals will be utilized to bring texture and detail to glass surfaces in bathrooms. Big showers mean big glass shower doors, which are rendered both more discreet and more artistic by the application of frosted vinyl decals.

Vinyl decals are also going to be making an appearance on mirrors in the form of decorative border details. A new take on the traditional mirror mosaic also finds expression in large mirror wall panels dressed with vinyl decals.

More and more interior designers are choosing frosted vinyl decals over sandblasting.

Frosted vinyl decals achieve the same sandblasted look, but are easier to install on-site. For use in kitchens and bathrooms in particular, vinyl decals also trump sandblasting as they are extremely easy to keep clean.

Sandblasted glass is easily marked with unsightly, greasy fingerprints that are difficult to remove. This is because oils – even just natural skin oils – become trapped in the porous surface of frosted glass. In the kitchen, this is particularly problematic as the presence of oil, grease and steam is a given. In the bathroom, the oils found in soap suds, shampoos and other beauty products similarly stain frosted glass surfaces.

Frosted vinyl decals are designed to be grease and dirt resistant, meaning that greasy fingerprints aren’t a problem. If frosted vinyl decals do become grubby, they are easily cleaned with just a cursory lick of ordinary window cleaner.

Whether the style is Grecian-inspired, retro-chic or timelessly classic, frosted vinyl decals provide interior designers with an excellent opportunity to play with the abundance of glass favoured by modern homeowners.
